Urns
These urns are a very special item which I take great care in designing and creating. It is a tremendous honour to have my work selected to play such an important role in honouring a loved one and celebrating a life. I can assure you that I have taken every possible step to ensure my urns are worthy of this important task. I strive to keep several urns available, as I am not able to produce these on short notice, due to the difficulty in acquiring high quality materials and the time needed to do this work properly.
I carefully handcrafted each urn from a solid block of specially selected wood. The block is first shaped to establish the upper curves and then hollowed out through the neck of the urn, to a wall thickness of less than 1 cm; only then is the exterior shape completed. To prevent warping, the entire turning must then be specially packaged and left for several months to allow the wood to dry and distort. Once the wood has finished moving, it must be returned to the lathe and trued back into the round prior to final shaping. Next the urn is smoothed using progressively finer grits of sandpaper and steel wool. Finally, the urn is treated with a combination of natural oils and waxes to achieve a smooth, low lustre finish that will highlight the amazing grain patterns contained in the wood. The lid or finial is then turned to fit tightly to the urn - some containing an o-ring for an air-tight seal.
